How long will this take?

Each of the four lessons might take a session –however long we decide one session should be, let’s say between an hour and two, to start with. We might also get to Lesson Four the first day. Expect us to accelerate as we go along. It may also take longer, especially if there are days between lessons, but we should show encouraging progress each time we meet.

What can and can’t spelling be used for?

One limitation is that we should stick to the question-and-answer format for a long time. Another is that you will be leading the whole time, at least in form. Also there are certain questions and topics to be avoided.

Must I help a speller communicate something distasteful?

If we are just communicating for fun it shouldn’t come up, but I would advise against participating in a put-down of yourself or someone dear to you. Obviously, parents or paid Communication Partners should allow some aggressive typed communication, since everyone needs to let off steam and everyone deserves a chance to win an argument, but I still don’t think that wanton cruelty should be abetted.

What are my ethical responsibilities?

To check with me after every completed thought, to make sure that’s what I meant and whether I wish to stand by it. Also, in general to be humble about what we are doing and its chances for success. We are fighting my fate, and shouldn’t forget it, or make too much of any one day’s work.
